Gonna Moderate the HECK out of Some Panels at the BOSTON COMIC CON!

It’s official, folks – I’ve been invited to moderate two AMAZING panels at the Boston Comic Con next weekend, April 30th-May 1 at the Hynes Convention Center! Not only am I flattered, but I’m super-psyched to get the chance to chat with some creators I truly admire.

I’ll be moderating the Female Creators Panel with Ming Doyle, Sara Richard, Stephanie Buscema, and Allison Sohn on Saturday, April 30 from 11:30A.M.-12:15.PM and the Spotlight on Terry Moore from 6:00P.M.-6:45P.M that same day – so get yo’ questions ready!

Here’s the full lineup for the Con:

Ummm…I bought some stuff at New England Comic Con.

Finally, major gaps in the Happy Blogtime library have been filled! This past weekend’s Wizard World New England Comic Con in Boston proved to be a major jackpot for me; if I told you the prices I got up in here – hooked up by Billy, who’s the BESTISH! – you would start foaming at the mouth. I swear I’ve had dreams like this (you know those dreams…where you’re walking around a comic shop and everything’s on sale? No?).

I also wrote a lil’ recap of the event for the Adams Media Daily Bender blog here, complete with a picture of a Wookiee. A very attractive Wookiee (we exchanged numbers).

Here’s what I scooped:

  • Alias, Issues 1-11
  • The Perhapanauts, Book 1
  • Chew, Book 1
  • Wormwood: Gentleman Corpse
  • Marvel Romance
  • Marvel Romance Redux: Another Kind of Love
  • Eternals
  • Wolverine Classic, Vol. 5
  • NYX: No Way Home
  • Criminal: Lawless
  • Criminal: Coward
  • Marvel 1602
  • Women of Marvel
  • Locke & Key: Welcome to Lovecraft, Vol. 1
  • John Constantine, Hellblazer: Original Sins
  • The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, Vol. 1
  • Hellboy: Wake the Devil, Book 2
  • The Boys: The Name of the Game, Vol. 1
  • 30 Days of Night, Vol. 1
  • The Goon: Nothin’ But Misery, Vol. 1
  • Wizard X-Men Masterpiece Edition, Vol. 1
  • Comic Book Tattoo
  • Drawing Down the Moon: The Art of Charles Vess, Hardcover

Whoah. Nerdgasm, right? I can’t wait to sit down and read for hours – some of it for the first time, even! What books in my stash have YOU read, faithful minions? And what should I cop more of?

Maine Comics Arts Festival Maine-ia!

Though the true highlight of my weekend was, in fact, my awesome lil’ brother’s college graduation, the Maine Comics Arts Festival in Portland was next on the list. I met some amazingly talented artists, scooped some soda freebies, and copped some customized swag.

You can check out my short-but-sweet recap and photos of the Fest here at The Daily Cross Hatch.

Meanwhile, I had to share some of the goodies I grabbed/really wanted to grab (my budget was $20, peoples!)…

This Weekend: The Maine Comics Arts Festival

This Sunday, you can catch me in Portland, Maine at the Maine Comics Arts Festival, getting the scoop on over 70 comic artists and writers in attendance, including special guests: Kean Soo (Jellababy), Becky Cloonan (Demo), Chris Giarrusso (Mini Marvels), Gabrielle Bell (Cecil and Jordan New York Stories) and more.

I’ll have a full report for the folks at The Daily Cross Hatch, which I’ll of course link to when it’s up.

Where I’ll Be 5/17: The Maine Comic Arts Festival

Here is the beginning of my post. And here is the rest of it.

Better Late Than Never, Right? The “I Saw You…” Book Signing with Julia Wertz in Brooklyn!

In celebration of the newly-released Julia Wertz-edited comics collection I Saw You…: Comics Inspired by Real-Life Missed Connections, Desert Island, a sweet indie comic store in Brooklyn, hosted a book-signing a couple of weeks ago for all the friends and fans of this amassing of hilarity.

In case you’re one of those n00bs who happen to read my blog, Julia Wertz is the genius behind the hard-to-say-because-I’m-giggling title Fart Party, the hilarious, quirky autobio of a misplaced San Franciscoan in New York (check it out here, and of course pick up a copy at FPNYC).

Despite the barrage of hipster-types in attendance (and who am I too judge, really?), the signing went swimmingly, and the contributors seemed both pleased and slightly buzzed from the free beer.

And,*ahem*, did I mention I received my very own Missed Connection on Craigslist just last month? I feel so desired.

You can find out more about I Saw You…: Comics Inspired by Real-Life Missed Connections here and grab a copy here on Amazon.

Harvey Pekar Harumphs His Way to My Heart

A couple of days ago I attended a phenomenal event featuring a discussion with Harvey Pekar – the third in a series hosted by YIVO Institute for Jewish Research, titled “Comics and the Jewish American Dream.” Harvey Pekar (n00bs: the guy behind American Splendor) sat on a stage with Danny Fingeroth (comic book writer/editor: wiki-peer at him here) and answered questions, extrapolated on details from his American Splendor days, and shared his upcoming plans for more books, books, books (projects I’ll discuss separately in the future, of course).

And he won’t lie to you – he’ll say it like it is. He tries to do four books or projects a year to keep the finances rolling in; not that he doesn’t enjoy the art, but that’s just how it is, it’s his job.

SIDENOTE: Getting INTO this event was like getting onto Airforce One (although getting into my Airforce Ones is a cushy, comfortable joy with great arch support). The Institute for Jewish Research had one of the most hardcore security systems I’ve ever experienced: metal detectors, pat-downs, pocket-emptying, bag-scanning. It was serious – we Jews keep it reals.

If you haven’t read his The Quitter yet, a collab with webcomix king and prolific illustrator Dean Haspiel, you’d know less about how Harvey feels about obligation and occupation – but I can say that despite his past tendencies to give up on things, his sticktoitness in the book industry is a welcome asset.

After the event, I went with a friend (also a friend of Harvey’s) to go shake his hand, exchange pleasantries. Drinks were planned on being had afterwards with a few of us and Harvey at a local pub, but he was just simply tuckered. I couldn’t imagine “drinking” with Harvey Pekar anyway, especially in the physical state he seemed to be in. I know he’d been suffering some health issues, and I’m sure the last thing he wanted to do was coddle beers with some twenty and thirty-somethings.

Either way, we clinked our glasses to Harvey while he sat in his hotel room, probably sleeping. But he doesn’t really care about all that. Isn’t that why we love him?

NOTE: Thanks to Gary Dunaier, from whose Flickr Photostream I grabbed the event photos.
